Plants and light

How can we show a plant needs light for photosynthesis. We set up two bijou tubes with bicarbonate indicator in them and the water plant Cabomba. We then put one in the dark and one in the light. If photosynthesis happens the indicator will turn purple if there is no photosynthesis it will be yellow. We will see our results tomorrow.

P1 -4 and Middle school tutors!

Today, middle school were working with primary 1-4 as peer tutors. We were looking at the difference between traditional and digital art, examples of different art media, and introducing the concept of abstract art. It was a very successful afternoon and middle school pupils were superb assistant teachers!

Photography challenge!

As part of their ongoing art homework, middle school pupils were experimenting with photography. They had to either take a photo or edit an image of their choice. Here are the results:

Design progress

Middle school pupils have been working on some more aspects of design this week. They completed their internet research of the dimensions of a range of different tablets and phones. They used this info to measure and draw out paper prototypes:

They then created more accurate prototypes using foam board. They will add plasticine to make the prototypes the correct weight:

The groups then worked together on a small design project to design a school bag:

Community, crime and punishment

As middle school are ending their investigation of 17th C Edinburgh they spent time learning about crime and punishment in the past. We've looked at Burke and Hare, torture, punishments for withcraft and other gory details of Scotland's past.




This led in to group discussion about communities- who should decide on guilt? Who decides punishment? What is a fair punishment? Is there such a thing? What is the point of punishment?

Plants !

Middle school were testing a leaf for starch today. Iodine solution which is yellow/ brown turns a blue black colour when starch is present.

Coloured light

P7 were mixing different colours of light today to see how we can get different colours from red blue and green light.
