Introduction to Cities

We started a new topic in middle school today - cities. Here are some of the areas we will be working on around this topic:

1. A history of cities, focusing on Edinburgh
2. Info about 18 of the most interesting cities in the world (and why they're interesting)
3. How to deconstruct a video, advert and image
4. How a camera and video camera works
5. Some basic photography techniques
6. Photo editing
7. Important street artists and their work
8. Important architects and their work
9. The role that computers and other technology play in cities
10. Public health and sustainability issues in cities

Today we discussed different places in the world we have visited and put markers on the map where we have been. Pupils then created city fact files for one of the places they had visited.

Successful exhibition!

Thank you to all who supported our 1st ever digital art exhibition today. It was a super success with over 90 paintings sold!

Middle school pupils were excellent at welcoming visitors, showing them round and demonstrating different apps. They were a credit to the school- well done!

I will send home as many of the purchased paintings as possible with the relevant children before we break up for the holidays. Some paintings will have to be reordered over the holidays but will be ready for as soon as we come back.

If you have bought a painting and it has not arrived by Tuesday 1st November, please do not hesitate to email me as it is possible that there may have been the odd mishap with our ordering system at busy times! jo@cedars.inverclyde.sch.uk

If you couldn't make the exhibition but would like to order a painting, you can view most of the exhibits on our flickr site. You can access it from the page that lists all the blogs on the school website.

Please email me at
if you want to order any paintings and I will arrange it. jo@cedars.inverclyde.sch.uk

Creative writing

Middle school pupils were finishing their story 'Wrongly Accused' this morning:

They worked in pairs to proof read and give feedback on each others work:

Some pupils also thought about the various settings of their story and created some images made up of words associated with the setting:

Speech day!

At last, P7-S2 are giving their speeches on the DNA database. Today's speeches were the culmination of three weeks of research, investigating and speech writing. I am delighted with the hard work and enthusiasm the middle school have shown- the quality of their speeches reflects the effort they have put in.

Well done middle school!!

Exhibition visit

Pupils in middle school had the chance to preview the digital art exhibition this week and spot their own work. We also discussed our favourite pieces and why they are successful.

There is a short video on our Vimeo channel of the exhibition

Preparations...

Middle school pupils have been preparing for next Tuesday's art exhibition this week. They have been considering the key aspects of different art apps with a view to how they will demonstrate them to the exhibition visitors.

They also worked with P1 pupils (& a few P3s) as peer mentors to teach them how to use ArtRage and to create their first digital painting. It was a very successful afternoon with some super results:

Digital Art Exhibition

Middle school pupils will be running an exhibition of digital art on Tuesday 11th October from 10 am - 2 pm. The exhibition includes work from P1 - S5 and will be held in the New Dawn Coffee Shop top hall. The hall can be accessed from Jamaica Lane or through the coffee shop on West Stewart Street. Pupils will be giving demonstrations of how to use different art apps on the iPad, paintings will be for sale and all visitors will get a free tea or coffee voucher for the New Dawn Coffee Shop.

All are very welcome to come along for a look round.

Presentations

Today, pupils were giving short presentations they had researched and prepared last week.

Each pupil was assessed and given some formative feedback to help them improve. Pupils did very well!
